Using SL 1.7.3 in El Capitan

Post by diamondsea7 »

Hello, I see that there is a thread on difficulties with using SL in Yosemite. There were some (imperfect) workarounds listed there. Does it work at all in El Capitan? (Many things don't, it seems.)

I am new to SL but am excited by the possibilities it seems to offer. However, despite following the 'Readme' instructions, SL just does not seem to work on my El Capitan-addled Mac. It does appear as an available plug-in in Garageband and Logic but not in Ableton Live. Even in Logic/Garageband, however, I get this error message when I try to use SL: "No response from SooperLooper engine process. Please make sure the JACK server is running. Also check that the system’s hostname resolves properly." The same thing happens when I try to load SL on its own. Has anyone been able to use SL with El Capitan?

Hello,
I got SL to work with El Capitan, but it's confusing sometimes. Do you start Jack first, then SL? I noticed that sometimes the connection is not possible, rebooting everything helps. Pitch-shifting and timestretching doesn't work though. I used my described workaround (change hostname to localhost) in the other thread, it seems to work most of the time. I use SL standalone normally.
I think the Jack server itself might be buggy since the newest OSX-updates.

When I try to install Jack, I see this message: "This package is incompatible with this version of OS X and may fail to install. Installing this package may damage your system, and the installation may fail." Thus, I did not install Jack. However, I thought that SL can work on a Mac even without Jack?: "A Mac OS X Audio Unit version is included which does not require JACK to run." Am I mistaken?

The maintainers released a test version of Jack that installs (and works) on El Capitan, in the link available here:

Yes, you do need to start Jack first, then SL.

Or you might consider using the AudioUnit version of SL which is included in the download. You just need to drag the SooperLooperAU64.component (and the other if you need 32 bit) into your Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/ folder. Then use an existing application which can host AUs...

I dragged both SooperLooperAU.component and SooperLooperAU64.component to the Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components. Still, I have the problems described above. Ableton Live does not even seem to recognise SL (although it recognises everything else in my Components folder). Logic and Garageband do recognise it but they don't seem to work with it. I'm going to try the JackOSX file that you linked.

OK, I'm able to get things to work now with the new JackOSX file. (Also, I realised that I had not activated AU plug-ins in Ableton Live, only VST plug-ins.) Thanks!
